Do Business Owners Really Need to Show Up on Social Media?

This question comes up everywhere: workshops, networking events, masterminds, Instagram… you name it.

So let’s clear it up once and for all:

Do you have to show up online as a business owner?
No.

I work with many successful founders who have zero social media presence.
They don’t share their story, their family, behind-the-scenes moments, or daily “authentic” updates.
They’ve never danced on TikTok , and still built powerful, profitable businesses.

Let’s talk about why.

3 Reasons Why You Don’t Need to Show Up Online

1. Your time is your most valuable asset.

Showing up consistently takes time, energy, planning, and creativity.
And many successful founders choose to invest that time into:

  • operations

  • product development

  • team growth

  • sales

  • improving client delivery

Not content.

And that is a completely valid choice.

From my point of view:
Paid media buys your time back.
Instead of spending hours creating content, you invest in ads and reach more people, faster.

2. Your brand shouldn’t rely on you to scale.

If your business is tied to you, your face, your personality, your life, then the business can only grow as far as you can stretch.

A scalable brand has:

  • its own identity

  • its own values

  • its own story

Separate from the founder.

And this becomes critical if you want to:

  • expand

  • hire

  • merge

  • or get acquired

This is exactly where many founder-led brands hit a ceiling.

3. There’s no proven data that “founder content = more sales.”

There is zero solid research showing that founders who post online generate more revenue.
Most of the advice out there is based on reach, likes, and engagement, not profit.

And we all know reach doesn’t equal revenue.

Now… When Should You Show Up Online?

There are scenarios when founder visibility is a strategic advantage.

✅ When you are the service.

Coaches, consultants, fractional leaders, creatives, experts, your clients are buying you.
Your ideas, your process, your energy.

For example, at Gerber Media, when someone works with us, they work directly with me. Showing up online builds trust and helps prospects understand how I think.

✅ When you’re building a personal brand.

If you want to:

  • become a keynote speaker

  • write a book

  • build an audience

  • grow a community

  • sell through thought leadership

…then yes, you should show up. Ideally on video — because it builds trust the fastest.

A Quick Story

An agency I collaborate with was recently acquired.
Huge revenue. Industry authority. Massive clients.
And the owner?

Never — not once — showed up online.

They grew through:

  • referrals

  • a strong sales team

  • paid media

No Reels.
No personal branding.
No “here’s my morning routine.”

And they still exited successfully.

So what’s the real answer?

You don’t need to show up online to succeed.
But if you are the product, or if visibility supports your goals, then showing up becomes a strategic advantage.

The key is choosing the path that aligns with the business you’re building.
